Fringes is a unique part of I’MUN which was introduced 3 years ago and has been one of the most enjoyable and successful aspects of the conference. In addition to our ordinary committees, the unparalleled idea of Fringes is introduced through our outstanding Fringe Committees. The Fringes team are a group of students, selected, in order to work together for the purpose of coming up with these ideas. These committees allow for the delegates to experience an MUN unlike any other. Moving away from the conventional MUN style of debate, Fringe Committees are usually quite small, involve directives rather than resolutions, and focus on several crises instead of one large topic. The delegates are also given more power and freedom with what actions they are able to take. The delegates will be put on the spot and required to think very quickly in order to respond quickly to any crises at hand, especially since the committee is made up of crises. While the delegates are the ones coming up with the directives, the backroom, a small group from the Fringes team, are those who reject or accept the ideas in order to ensure a smooth and a heated debate.
Each year, we introduce two new Fringe Committees that will uniquely enhance the experience of the conference. For IMUN’21, the first committee will revolve around the Russian Revolution which took place in 1917 following the economic inequality in Russia and the deteriorating political situation experienced in the early 20th century. The delegates will take a trip to the past, before the dethroning of Tsar Nicholas II, and will work on creating a post Tsar state while trying to prevent the collapse of Russia. For our second Fringe Committee, we wanted to ensure that it would be a highly modern and relevant topic that is significantly related to the IMUN’21 theme. We have therefore devoted the second committee to the COVID-19 coronavirus, an issue that is the center of attention in today’s world. The delegates will be tasked with preventing the spread of the virus while aiding other countries, taking into consideration their public’s opinion on each decision. A single mistake in a decision could greatly harm a single country or the entire world.
