Presidential Welcome

As times progress, and the scientific and technological innovations continue to advance and improve, we now live in a world where we cannot even guarantee control to our own thoughts, ideas, and actions. We no longer have the reassurance that at the end of the day we still get to decide what information we do or do not share with others. This is one of the many issues that we will be tackling in this year’s IMUN conference, and in the UNCSTD in specific, considering how this year’s theme, “Monopoly on Thought” sheds light on how with all the developments that we are witnessing, even our own thoughts and beliefs may no longer be our own.
My name is Hala Ali-Hassan, and I have earned the honor of presiding over the “United Nations Commission on Science and Technology for Development” this year. MUN has been a major passion of mine ever since I signed up for my first ever conference in the eighth grade, possibly one of the most terrifying, yet immensely rewarding, decisions I have ever made. My journey in debate has been an exhilarating one that taught me many skills and allowed me to expand my knowledge on the current political events happening in the world, as well form so many bonds and meet many interesting new people. Now my journey has led me to IMUN, in which we will be debating the topics of; the global issue of regulating cyber security procedures and forbidding data breaches, and the deployment of nuclear weapons in space and how they affect the safety of the world.
Delegates, we cannot remain silent while our freedom and rights are being taken away from us. Let us take matters into our own hands, let us debate like there’s no tomorrow, until we reach effective and impactful solutions that will allow us to retrieve our right to our voices. Our right to our thoughts.

Sincerely,
Hala Ali-Hassan
